SALES of the second volume of a book about the life Fred Dibnah are expected to rise after its official launch next week.

The book, titled Fred Dibnah MBE Vol 2, is sold exclusively in WH Smiths and went on sale on May 26.

Bolton store manager, Estelle Thompson, said: “Sales are going really well. I think there is less knowledge about this book than the first one and people seem quite surprised there is another volume.

“It has become a best-seller for us but it has not taken off as quickly because we have not had the signing yet.”

The author, Keith Langston, will be signing copies of the book at WH Smiths in Victoria Square, Bolton, on Thursday, June 15, from 10.30 to midday. The book contains 125 chapters of personal reflections on the life of the famous steeplejack, including tributes from his friends and family.

Publishers Morton’s Media Group will then present a donation of £10,000 to the Fred Dibnah Memorial Appeal which will go towards a statue of Fred. The first book about Fred’s life sold more that 6,000 copies to reach number five in the WH Smith national chart last May.

The appeal, launched by Bolton Civic Trust and backed by the Bolton Evening News, aims to erect a statue of Fred alongside the Hick Hargreaves steam engine in Oxford Street in the town centre.
