Lament Of A Chimney

"For many a year you stood erect and high,

A local landmark in the sky,

Over the years you've served this town

Keeping unemployment down,

But alas fate has struck with a cruel hand,

Closing your factories that once were grand,

Now you lie crumpled on the floor,

Rest in peace for evermore."

This Lament was penned by Frank Westell of Baxenden Lancashire on the day that Fred Demolished the Platts Saco Lowell Chimney at the old Globe Works in Accrington at the end of July 1996.

And just to note, even though Fred had demolished over 90 Chimneys this was the only one that fought back, for after the supporting telegraph poles had burnt away the chimney still stayed standing and needed a bit of help with a jack hammer. "Them Bloody Accy Nori" LOL

RIP Fred…
