Mine/Well Brickwork

Howdy from 'Downunder'. Hoping someone up there may be able to assist me. I'm planning to dig a well in my back yard and would like to brick the walls of it similarly to Fred's mine shaft. In a property I used to own we had a bricked well in the rear yard. No mortar was used, just loose bricks in circles, about 30 foot depth. I never could figure how they constructed it until I recently saw one of Fred's DVD's which mentioned the iron ring he used to add courses of bricks as he dug. Not a lot of information was given and I need a little more if anyone has any ideas please.
I understand that several courses of bricks are added to the ring, which is suspended by a cable and then the earth is dug from beneath the ring to a diameter matching the ring and the OD of the brickwork. The ring in then lowered and more courses added and so on. The part that I can't figure out is what keys the brickwork cylinder to the earth around it. What stops the weight of the brickwork cylinder from dropping when the iron ring is lowered. All I could think of was that re-bar rods may have been driven into the earth at intervals below the brickwork to key the cylinder in ? Can anyone help please ?? Cheers Pete

Yep, Bugga, not a bite. I really need to talk to Fred or someone who helped him with the mine. Any suggestions re other possible building type forums on the net ?

I can help… as the brickwork is being built steel rods are hammered into the surrounding earth between courses. So if you were to x-ray the ground the brickwork ring would look like a big spider!! This enables the brickwork to be 'suspended' once the steel ring is lowered.Obviously dont lower the ring until the brickwork has gone off.
Come on dibnah fans where's ya knowledge…
