...to Fred who, very sadly died in Autumn 2004. It's difficult to explain to many how a steeple-jack and demolition expert from Bolton, England achieves a cult following as an idustrial heritage historian. However, if you settle down with a mug of tea one afternoon and watch this series made for BBC TV, you'll begin to understand why his infectious enthusiasm catches on: Fred is hugely knowledgeable, a skilled draughsman and takes you around some of his favourite haunts, describing how and why they were buillt and work, plus why they were important. And he does so just as though you are his friend and are right beside him on his travels. Our industrial heritage has never had a finer story-teller; Fred makes it hugely enjoyable and will be much missed.
